Animal Upon Animal

Crocodile carries sheep carries penguin: the stacking classic for steady hands and a good eye.

How it plays

The die decides whether you stack one animal, two, or a particularly tricky one onto the growing pyramid โ€“ the crocodile is the base. If anything tumbles, it goes back to whoever caused the crash. The first player to place all their wooden animals wins.

What it trains

Every animal has an awkward shape of its own โ€“ where does it go so nothing tips over? The game combines fine motor control and force dosing with spatial reasoning: children estimate contact surfaces, anticipate balance and learn from collapses. Frustration stays low because a crash usually triggers laughter instead of tears.

Community voices: One of Haba's best-selling titles ever, recommended by parents and occupational therapists alike. The quality wooden pieces and cross-generational fun earn constant praise; some families simply keep playing it as a free-form building toy.
Our tip for parents: A fine-motor classic โ€“ losing doesn't sting here, because the collapse usually ends in giggles.

Especially good for

  • Kids from 4 who love to build
  • Mixed-age groups โ€“ adults have no real advantage
  • Building the precursor skills for pencil grip

Less suitable for

  • Very impatient children at first
  • On the go โ€“ it needs a flat surface
